In the last week there was an announcement about China changing it’s one-child policy which was met with skepticism and an eventual back-pedaling statement by Chinese officials and media. The initial statements were very brief and dissatisfying for international advocates and watch dogs. I think that it’s interesting how this policy has not only brought upon brutality upon women for having multiple pregnancies, but also gendercide and the increase of the sex trafficking industry to Southeast Asia.
This announcement of ending the one-child policy also came days after China was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council. It is such a slap in the face of all people seeking justice to have an abusive government and many others like it (Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and Vietnam) that are supposed to patrol the safety, peace, and justice of international abuses or conflicts.
So what can you do?
Support, listen, and share what different organizations like All Girls Allowed are doing to help end the oppression of women in China and advocate for women’s rights all over the world. Write to Congress and share your voice of concern for others. Every time you raise awareness there is possibility for change. As Christians we must be looking out for the vulnerable and oppressed, in this case, the women and children who are being brutalized and killed for the very fact that they draw breath and bring life forth- just as God made us to do so that we could be fruitful and multiply on the earth.
