This morning as I was driving to the store I happened to hear Katy Perry’s new song “Unconditionally” and the lyrics really reminded me of what God’s love is for us. Here is the chorus:
I will love you unconditionally
There is no fear now
Let go and just be free
I will love you unconditionally.
This song has expressions of the Gospel throughout it. The second verse reads, “Come just as you are to me, Don’t need apologies, Know that you are worthy, I’ll take your bad days, with your good, Walk through the storm I would, I do it all because I love you, I love you.” God walks with us and his perfect love casts out all fear. I wonder if Perry’s evangelical upbringing has anything to do with this song, considering that on her new album, Prism, also features a song “By the Grace of God” talking about how it was by God’s grace she was able to pick herself back up.
Perry said this about “Unconditionally”, “Nobody comes stuff-free. Everybody has their things and you’re never going to be perfect, and accepting that and understanding that, especially in a relationship, it makes room for a real, genuine kind of love.”
I hope that God is working in Katy Perry’s heart, and I definitely know many (not all) of her songs have been encouraging to me as I pursue how to love God more fully on a daily basis.
