So I’m going to be honest that up until the last two weeks I had no desire of having a Pinterest at all because it just isn’t something that I normally would be interested in. But (and this is a huge but), I started using it this last week and it has been helpful for brainstorming, researching, and vision-casting for my ministry. I like to hear what others are doing and think critically about the possibilities that people make available to see and model after. I think that if you focused and allowed yourself to be too influenced by sites like Pinterest you could become overly consumeristic, but I am trying to make conscious decisions on buying material from local art and craft stores instead of big chain stores. People need to not only feel relationally welcomed into our churches, but also enjoy what our buildings have to offer aesthetically. God made us with the ability to enjoy the beauty around us. I’m not interested in doing the next “cool” thing, but I am interested in adapting parts of activities or spaces that would be beneficial for reaching kids and families for Christ.
Lesson plans, crafts, and interior design are a few categories that I have been clicking on. If you are thinking about whether you should be interested in using Pinterest for ministry I would encourage you to at least try it out. You don’t have to link it to your Facebook so you don’t have to make your friends annoyed every time you Pin something (which is sort of how I feel when I see those updates on my News Feed).
If you are using Pinterest for ministry what are some categories or boards you have created? I wouldn’t mind hearing what you’ve done!
