“Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem. The rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten of them to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their towns.” 11:1
In Nehemiah 11 all the people who move into Jerusalem are documented. Though it should be recognized right off the bat by the process of picking them described in 11:1 that it is a privilege to live in the holy city. There are responsibilities to be done, relationships to be made, and a holy God to obey and worship as residents of the “holy city.”
While as Christians we may not have a central location- since the temple of God is within our hearts through the Holy Spirit- we still have many responsibilities to be done, relationships to pursue with others, and to worship God and revere his holiness through our daily acts of obedience and love as citizens of heaven (Phil. 3:20).
God, help us to take your holiness and saving grace seriously in our lives. Show us the responsibilities, relationships, and acts of worship that we can do that will please you and give you glory. We look forward to the New Jerusalem along with the New Heavens and Earth at the triumphant return of your son Jesus Christ. Help us until then to keep our eyes on you while sharing your love with all of those around. In Jesus name, Amen.
